A petroleum inspector is a person who inspects the shipment of petroleum to ensure that it meets the contract specifications. Assistant Petroleum Inspector generally helps the Chief Petroleum Inspector to perform all his duties and in writing reports as well as work as acting senior in his absence.



For a Senior Petroleum Inspector responsibilities and duties include the following:

  • Performing all the technical tasks
  • Facility installations
  • Inspection of pollution sources for ground and surface waters pollution;
  • Inspection of equipment operations like drilling and servicing structures and operations
  • Checking of fire prevention, hazardous conditions, and emission control, monitoring vapor production and disposal of fluids
  • Performing proper technical field and laboratory studies of potential contamination sources
  • And many other tasks like this
To be qualified as Petroleum Inspector one must have a good knowledge about petroleum industry. They must have excellent knowledge of industrial practices and regulatory framework of the industry like Petroleum Handling and Storage Law (2000 Revision). They must know about environmental and safety practices within the industry. The minimum degree required for the post of petroleum inspector is High School degree or general education degree (GED) whereas Graduate Degree in Engineering, mechanical, chemical or petroleum, or related science is quite preferable. No prior experience is required for entry level i.e. Assistant or Trainee Petroleum Inspector, but if a person wishes to join as Senior Petroleum Inspector directly then they should have at least one year prior experience in petroleum operations, and inspection or production.

One is properly trained to perform petroleum inspection work where they get to know about the application of prevailing Industry procedures and policies.

As an Assistant or Trainee Petroleum Inspector one can earn $18.38 - $22.44 hourly or we can say $3,197 - $3,903 per month. Whereas as Senior Petroleum Inspector can earn $65,000 to $75,000 annually.
