A petroleum inspector generally has duties like inspecting the shipment of crude or refined petroleum as it arrives at the shore, transfer samples in bottles and take it to laboratory, examine and analyze petroleum and thereon write relevant reports on the findings. Inspection of pollution sources for ground and surface waters pollution;
Inspection of equipment operations like drilling, servicing structures and operations
Checking of fire prevention, hazardous conditions, and emission control, monitoring vapor production and disposal of fluids

Academic and Training
To be qualified as a Petroleum Inspector one must have a good knowledge of the oil and petroleum industry and the related procedures. He must have excellent knowledge of industrial practices and regulatory framework of the industry like Petroleum Handling and Storage Law (2000 Revision). He must know about environmental and safety practices within the industry. The minimum educational degree required to acquire the post of petroleum inspector is a High School Degree or a General Education Degree (GED). Thereon a secondary level of education should include a Graduate Degree in Engineering, mechanical, chemical or petroleum and related sciences.
