The person in this position will conduct research programs on polyethylene (PE) resin durability and provide technical expertise on issues related to mechanical property and durability characterization of PE resins, and associated analyses. The primary responsibility is to provide basic understanding and analysis of PE resin durability behavior, and to conduct research programs to characterize PE resin durability. Specific end goals are to understand how polyethylene molecular structure and morphology affect the resinâ€™s durability, and how the resin durability properties translate to the end-use performance in specific applications.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Demonstrate leadership in safety. Participate in all safety and environmental initiatives set forth by the Company.
Act as a technical expert to CPChem groups on issues concerned with PE resin durability.
Identify, initiate and conduct new areas of research concerned with PE resin durability that are expected to be beneficial to CPChem.
Provide expertise in PE durability characterization methods and data analysis.
Serve as a company resource for development of new test methods and data analyses with the primary goal of providing a fundamental understanding of PE resin durability.
Provide expertise on applying PE resin durability properties to estimate the actual â€œin-serviceâ€ applications service life.
Skills or Abilities:
Adherence to all safety and environmental principles, procedures, and regulations.
Familiar with semi-crystalline polymers and their properties, mechanics of viscoelastic materials, fracture mechanics principles to viscoelastic materials, and service life estimates.
Ability to perform mechanical tests of the mechanical and durability properties of PE resins.
Ability to use PE resin durability properties to estimate PE resinsâ€™ actual performance in end-use applications.
Demonstrated ability to identify root-causes and to apply creative methods for problem-solving.
A self-starter with solid planning and excellent analytical skills.
Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills.
Ability to build and maintain relationships with peers, customers, and business partners.
Demonstrated ability to proactively assess and prioritize resin characterization and/or analysis opportunities and formulate a program that provides a beneficial contribution to the PE business.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Strong communication (both oral and written) skills in technical and non-technical business environment.
Excellent computing skills and a familiarity with Microsoft Office products. Knowledge and experience in computer programing desired, but not required.
PhD in Mechanical engineer, Polymer (chemistry or physics) Science , or Material (chemistry or physics) Science
At least 3 years of experience in industry or Academia related to Polymers
Demonstrated knowledge in PE testing, polymer mechanics, fracture mechanics, mechanical property characterization, durability property characterization, in-service performance estimation, and polymer structure/property relationship (industry or academia experience accepted).
